Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. They are third-party figures, some old, and not our offers.
Labuan Bajo to Cancar is an eastbound trip on the Trans-Flores road, and Cancar comes a little before Ruteng. Mongabay gives about 100 km by passenger bus in 2017, and Flores Traveler, an operator, about three and a half hours by road. Most sources quote Ruteng instead; the regency tourism office says about 110 to 140 km and 3 to 4 hours.
How far is Cancar from Labuan Bajo?
The one direct figure is Mongabay's: about 100 km by passenger bus, reported in 2017. Every other source here measures Labuan Bajo to Ruteng, which is a longer trip, because the fields lie west of town and Kompas (2017) puts them a short way off the Trans-Flores road between the two places. Coming from the west you reach Cancar first. Say Cancar or Lingko Lodok Cancar to a driver, then Weol once you are near; the names page explains why.
It is tempting to take a Ruteng figure and subtract a Ruteng-to-Cancar figure. We advise against it, since the two numbers would come from different authors measuring from different points, and the sources for the second one disagree among themselves. Our page on where the spider web rice field is lists them. On the map Ruteng lies further on, but the times do not line up: Flores Traveler's three and a half hours to Cancar is no shorter than Flores Eco Tours' 3 to 3.5 hours to Ruteng. The spider web rice field home page gives an overview of the place you are driving to.
How long does the drive from Labuan Bajo to Cancar take?
One operator gives a time to Cancar itself: Flores Traveler says three and a half hours from Labuan Bajo, in a trip report from April 2024. The rest below are published times to Ruteng, each with its origin. The regency office adds that its estimates may change with road and weather.
| Source | Type | Route as stated | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regency tourism office | Official | Komodo Airport to Ruteng, by road | About 110 to 140 km | About 3 to 4 hours |
| Travel2flores | Guide site | Labuan Bajo to Ruteng | 120 km | 4 hours non-stop |
| Flores Eco Tours | Operator | Labuan Bajo to Ruteng | 135 km | 3 to 3.5 hours |
| Kupi | Guide site | Labuan Bajo to Ruteng | About 140 km; also a calculated 132 km | About 4 hours; also a calculated 3 h 31 min |
| Azimuth Adventure Travel | Operator | Bus, Labuan Bajo to Ruteng | 140 km | About 5 hours |
| Mignon Travels | Travel blog | Local bus, Ruteng to Labuan Bajo | Not stated | 6 hours, one trip |
| Flores Traveler (2024) | Operator | Labuan Bajo to Cancar | Not stated | Three and a half hours |
| Mongabay (2017) | Press | Passenger bus towards Cancar | About 100 km | Not stated |
Private-vehicle times sit lower than bus times, and the one time reported from a single bus ride is the longest. The operators here have trips to sell, and the blog is one person's journey on an unknown date, so give the regency's wider estimate the most weight when you set a schedule.
When should you leave Labuan Bajo?
Work backwards from the light. The best time to visit page makes the case for early morning. Bali Genie, a travel guide, says midday overhead light flattens the boundaries, while early morning and late afternoon are softer. GeoKepo, a travel listing, gives daily hours of 07:00 to 18:00 and tells readers to confirm them with the venue.
Set that against a road of three hours or more. A normal mid-morning departure lands you close to the flat light, and arrival before 09:00 means setting off around dawn or earlier. Three workable patterns follow:
- Leave after breakfast, stop for a meal on the way, and reach the ridge in the afternoon.
- Drive through to Ruteng and double back the next morning. See our notes on Ruteng as a base.
- Leave very early and accept a long day if Cancar is all you came for. Our page on the spider web rice fields day trip asks whether one day is enough, and whether it is worth visiting asks the prior question.
Can you go by bus?
Buses run on this road, according to several accounts, but the details are thin. Azimuth gives about 5 hours for the Ruteng bus, and the Mignon Travels blog reports 6 hours and warns that public transport is not always reliable. Mongabay says Cancar is easier to reach through Ruteng by public transport, and Atlas Obscura says bemos and cars can be chartered from Ruteng, with drivers who know the viewpoints.
Timetables and crowding go unreported, and a set stop at the Cancar turning is unconfirmed, so settle that with the crew when you board, and ask how far the turning is from the path. The price table on this page gives what bus passengers reported paying and one per-day car figure, with their dates; they are third-party reports and this site runs no vehicles of its own. Payment at the top is on the spider web rice field entrance fee page.
What is the road like?
Komodo Resort, an operator, describes the Trans-Flores as running about 600 km from Labuan Bajo to Maumere and says it takes five to seven days to do properly, which gives a sense of the pace people expect from it. Travel2flores, updated March 2026, notes that road conditions change constantly, with floods and landslides on smaller roads. GeoKepo calls the stretch from central Ruteng to the fields paved and winding, though that covers the eastern approach and says nothing about the road from Labuan Bajo.
The western section has no published survey or list of fuel stops. As our own suggestion, fill up before leaving Labuan Bajo, and ask locally about current conditions, particularly in the wet months. Nothing here should be read as a statement about safety on a given day.
What else is on the way?
More spider web fields, for a start. Travelfish says they can also be seen on the way from Labuan Bajo to Ruteng, and Mongabay names Lembor in West Manggarai among the lodok areas. Komodo Resort treats Cancar and Liang Bua as its two stops between Labuan Bajo and Ruteng, although the regency office places Liang Bua north of Ruteng, so check how that fits your order of travel.
Lembor has a second claim on your attention. Flores Traveler, an operator, calls it known for the largest paddy field in Flores, and on 15 April 2024 its guests stopped to watch farmers ploughing, planting and cutting rice on the same day. Encyclopedia.com gives the largest wet-rice title to the valleys around Ruteng instead, so hold that superlative loosely.
What other distances does the regency publish from Labuan Bajo?
The 2026 pocket guide gives these figures for other places. They do not say the places lie on the road to Cancar, so check a current map.
| Place | Figure from Labuan Bajo | Origin |
|---|---|---|
| Wae Rebo | About 100 km and 3 hours, then a 9 km walk of 3 to 4 hours | Regency pocket guide, 2026 |
| Todo village | About 105 km and 3 hours | Regency pocket guide, 2026 |
| Ruteng Pu'u | About 125 km and 3.5 hours | Regency pocket guide, 2026 |
The start of the journey is simple enough to plan, on published routes. Wikipedia lists flights into Komodo International Airport from Jakarta, Surabaya and Denpasar, with international links to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore; check current airlines before relying on that. A resident quoted by Mongabay said foreign visitors reach Cancar and Wae Rebo after Komodo and Rinca. For the Ruteng end and other approaches, see our guide to getting to the spider web rice field.
What else do travellers ask about this road?
How far is Cancar from Labuan Bajo?
Mongabay reported about 100 km by passenger bus in 2017, the one direct distance cited here. Other sources measure to Ruteng, which lies beyond Cancar on the same road.
Is Cancar on the Trans-Flores route?
Very nearly. Kompas (2017) places the fields a short way off the Trans-Flores road between Labuan Bajo and Ruteng, so it needs a brief turn off the main road and not a long detour.
Where is Cancar relative to Labuan Bajo?
East of it, on the road towards Ruteng. Cancar lies west of Ruteng town, which means a traveller coming from Labuan Bajo reaches the fields before reaching town.
Can buses stop at Cancar rice fields?
A set stop is unconfirmed. Mongabay reports passenger buses towards Cancar but says the place is easier to reach through Ruteng by public transport. Ask the crew when you board, and allow for walking in from the main road.
Where can you stop for lunch on this road?
Flores Traveler, an operator, points to La Nusa Resto, 15 minutes before Cancar and known for smoked pork, on its 2024 trip. Treat that as one operator's mention and ask your driver what is open on the day.
Which published prices did we check?
Public third-party listings and press reports, each with its source and the month we checked it. These are not our prices or offers. No official tariff for the viewpoint was found, several figures are old, and sources disagree, so check locally before you rely on a figure.
