Lingko Meler is the name the Manggarai regency tourism office uses for the site visitors know as Spider Rice Field, in Meler Village, Ruteng District. The same office's 2026 guide also says Lingko Lodok Cancar. Cara, Golocara and Weol turn up in other sources, usually for nearby kampung or viewpoints. No single authority has settled the naming.

Why are there so many names?

Because the names work at different levels. Some describe a government village, some a kampung, some a hill you climb and some the system of land division itself. Guidebooks then pick whichever one their writer heard. Spider web rice field is the visitors' label, as the tourism office's wording suggests. This page does not claim to supply a ruling. It sorts the names by what each source seems to mean, and sources may use them for overlapping places.

What is Lingko Meler?

Lingko Meler is the nearest thing to an official name. The regency tourism office uses it on its destination page, and it places the site in Meler Village, Ruteng District, Manggarai Regency. The ISVS study supports the administrative part, counting Meler among the 22 villages of Ruteng District. The first word carries meaning too. The office treats lingko as customary land, tanah ulayat in Indonesian, so the name can be read as a statement of what the place is and whose it is.

One journal disagrees on the district. A 2025 tourism journal article says Meler is in "Cancar District" and covers 165 ha. The tourism office and the ISVS study say Ruteng District, and this guide follows them on administrative geography, while noting the conflict.

The address contains a trap of its own. Wikipedia says Ruteng town equates to Langke Rembong District, which is not the rural Ruteng District where Meler lies. So "Ruteng District" on a form or a map does not mean the town you may be staying in. If a page or an app puts the fields in the middle of town, this is a likely reason.

Lingko Meler is also not one field. Kompas reports eleven lingko from eight kampung in this stretch of rice land: Molo, Lindang, Pong Ndung, Temek, Jenggok, Lumpung, Purang Pane, Sepe, Wae Toso, Ngaung Meler and Lumpung II. You may hear any of those names from a resident pointing at a particular circle, and that does not mean you have gone to the wrong place.

Where do Cancar and Cara fit?

Cancar is the name most travellers will hear, and its status varies by source. The regency's pocket guide uses it in Lingko Lodok Cancar, a travel blog writes of Cancar village, and the 2025 journal writes of Cancar District. Those three uses do not add up to an agreed definition. Treat Cancar as the everyday local reference and not as a boundary.

Cara is harder to pin down, because it appears in several forms. Lonely Planet refers to Cara kampung. The Jakarta Post writes Golocara in a report from 2013. Komodo Trekker, an operator, offers Bukit Cara as a viewpoint alongside Puncak Weol. GeoKepo lists Sawah Lingko Cara. These may be one neighbourhood seen from different angles. The sources do not confirm that, and the differing distances (20 km in Lonely Planet, 12 km in the Jakarta Post) may reflect different points or simply different writers.

What are Weol and Golo Cara?

Weol is where you climb. Mongabay says all the fields can be seen from Puncak Weol. Komodo Trekker's parking near a sign reading Welcome Lodok could be a handy marker on the road, though it comes from one operator's page. Step counts and surfaces are in the Weol hill viewpoint guide.

Wae Belang is the other name you may meet here. Bali Genie places Weol in Wae Belang and says residents manage two entrances, and a travel blog reports several entrances in Cancar. So two people given the same name may stop at different places and both be right. Golo Cara, or Golocara as the Jakarta Post wrote it, has only that dated press report and the Bukit Cara mention behind it here, so ask before you treat it as a separate destination.

Which name should you ask for?

Match the name to the person or the system you are dealing with. This is practical advice from this guide, not a ruling on the correct name.

  • A driver in Ruteng: say Cancar or Lingko Lodok Cancar, then Weol once you are near. Travelfish expects any driver or guide to know the spot.
  • Official material: look under Lingko Meler, Meler Village, Ruteng District.
  • Map apps: in Google Maps or any other app, try Lingko Meler, Lingko Cara and Lodok Cancar, and compare where each pin lands.

Be careful with pins. Travelfish publishes GPS coordinates for a viewpoint about 17 km west of Ruteng, and Atlas Obscura pins a different point, so treat both as approximate. Save your map before leaving town. The wider question of position and distance is handled in where the spider web rice field is.

What do travellers ask about these place names?

How do you visit Lodok Cancar?

Use the recipe above for the driver, then look for the viewpoint at Weol. Komodo Trekker, an operator, mentions parking by a Welcome Lodok sign and a climb from there.

Is Lingko Meler in Cancar village?

The regency tourism office places Lingko Meler in Meler Village, Ruteng District. A travel blog writes of Cancar village, and the office's own 2026 pocket guide says Lingko Lodok Cancar, so the two names overlap without a defined boundary.

Is Lingko Meler the official name?

It is the name on the regency tourism office's destination page, which makes it the closest thing to official usage. The same office's 2026 pocket guide also lists Lingko Lodok Cancar, so even official usage is not limited to one name.

Is Lodok Cancar the traditional name?

Nothing in print settles that. Lodok refers to the centre point or division system, and Cancar is a local reference. Kompas gives eleven names for individual lingko in the area, which may be closer to how residents refer to particular fields.

Is Meler a village near Cancar?

Meler is a government village: the ISVS study calls it one of 22 villages in Ruteng District. Whether Cancar sits inside or beside it is not clear from published sources, which also disagree on the district. Treat the two as overlapping references for the same fields.
