Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. They are third-party figures, some old, and not our offers.

How to get to the spider web rice field comes down to two steps: reach Ruteng or the Trans-Flores road, then go on by car, scooter or chartered bemo. GeoKepo estimates a 30 to 45 minute drive from central Ruteng on a paved, winding road. We do not run transport, so treat this as a route guide.

There are two approaches. Travellers based in Ruteng make a short trip out of town. Travellers arriving from Labuan Bajo meet the fields along the road on the way to Ruteng, and that longer leg has its own guide from Labuan Bajo to Cancar. This page covers the local leg, the transport types that sources describe, the two airports and the state of the roads; the overview of the spider web rice field explains what you are travelling to.

How to get to the spider web rice field from Ruteng: car, scooter or bemo?

Ruteng is the practical starting point for this leg. GeoKepo, a travel listing, gives a 30 to 45 minute drive from the middle of town and says rural transport is available. Read that as a drive estimate, because it is not a timetable. Kilometre figures differ between publishers, and a separate page on where the fields are sets them side by side.

A chartered vehicle removes most of the guesswork. In Ruteng, Atlas Obscura reports, you can charter either a bemo or a car, and the drivers know where the viewpoints are. Travelfish agrees, saying drivers and guides alike know the place. Agree before you set off whether the vehicle waits while you climb, since the return is the part of the trip that public transport descriptions leave blank.

A scooter is the other documented option. The travel blog Museum of Wander reached Cancar by scooter from Ruteng and describes the road as scenic. That is one trip on one day, and it says nothing about your experience on a winding hill road in the wet. Whether your licence and insurance cover a scooter is a question for your insurer.

Can you use public transport?

In outline, yes, though you cannot plan it to the hour. Mongabay reported in 2017 that Cancar is about 100 km from Labuan Bajo by passenger bus and that public transport works better if you go via Ruteng. GeoKepo mentions rural transport without giving details. Between them they establish that local vehicles run in this area. Timetables and bemo or ojek fares for Cancar remain undocumented.

The price table on this page shows the 2017 bus figure and a per-day figure for a car, driver and fuel from travel2flores.info. Both belong to those publishers and neither is an offer from us. The bus number is old enough that you should treat it as background.

If you try it, ask in Ruteng the day before where vehicles for Cancar leave from, and ask the crew on arrival when the last one goes back. Carry enough time in your plan to give up and charter a ride instead. Nobody should build a same-day flight connection on a bemo that has no published schedule.

Is there a door-to-door minibus from Labuan Bajo?

One blog says yes. Museum of Wander recommends Gunung Mas, a minibus service with individual seats and pick-up and drop-off at your accommodation, reserved through a hotel the day before. It gives about 5 hours from Labuan Bajo to Ruteng. That serves Ruteng and not Cancar, and the blog does not mention a stop at the turning, so treat it as your way into town and use the local leg from there.

Which airports serve the area?

The nearest airport named in published guides is at Ruteng. Frans Sales Lega Airport (RTG) sits about 2 km from the centre of Ruteng at 1,150 m, according to Wikipedia. Komodo International Airport (LBJ) at Labuan Bajo is the larger gateway, with a road journey still to come.

Komodo International (LBJ), Labuan BajoJakarta, Surabaya and Denpasar, plus Kuala Lumpur and SingaporeAirlines add and drop routes; confirm with the carrier

Airline routes change, and these lists are a starting point only. Check the carrier before you book anything that depends on them. Azimuth Adventure Travel, an operator, publishes a longer route list for Ruteng than Wikipedia does.

Flights into Ruteng bring a specific risk. Flores Eco Tours, an operator, says fog and rain often make Ruteng flight schedules uncertain, especially from October to March. If you have a boat or an onward flight booked at Labuan Bajo, that warning should weigh on your decision, and you would want a spare day between the two.

Why do some route descriptions look wrong?

One operator page, from Nusa Flores Travel, sets out the legs in an order that does not fit the map, so we do not repeat its route. Travelfish says you can spot fields of this kind while driving from Labuan Bajo towards Ruteng, and it puts the Cancar viewpoint about 17 km west of Ruteng, the direction you would be coming from. An itinerary that sends you past Cancar to Ruteng first may still make sense, because a hotel or a morning visit could explain it. Ask for the reason, and do not assume the order is the only one available.

What are the roads like?

GeoKepo calls the road from Ruteng paved and winding, which is about as much detail as any source offers. Travel2flores, updated in March 2026, adds a wider warning: conditions on the island shift all the time, and smaller roads suffer floods and landslides. That is a statement about the island, and it does not describe a particular stretch near Cancar.

Museum of Wander, riding a scooter around Ruteng, found the roads narrow but in decent shape, on one trip. Ask your driver or lodging about gradient and road state on the morning you travel, especially after heavy rain, and allow extra time.

How do you find the entrance?

Most people will not need to navigate, since a chartered driver knows the viewpoints. Riders should load an offline map and the coordinates before leaving town. The publishers do not fully agree on the viewpoint position, which is one more reason to ask residents when you are close. Access is not a single gate either, and our Weol Hill viewpoint guide explains how the entrances and the climb work. Once the route is clear, check the spider web rice field entrance fee reports, the spider web rice fields day trip plans, the best time to visit and whether it is worth visiting.

What if you are coming from Bajawa?

Plan on a long road day and a night in Ruteng. Museum of Wander gives about 5 hours from Ruteng to Bajawa by minibus and says Labuan Bajo to Bajawa in one day takes 10 to 12 hours at least. A Girl Named Clara, another blog, reached its Ruteng hotel around 7:30 pm after the long drive from Bajawa and saw the fields after breakfast the next morning. Coming from the east you pass through Ruteng first, so sleep there, then use the local leg above. Figures from Bajawa to Cancar itself are unpublished.

What else do travellers ask about reaching Cancar?

Is Cancar accessible by car?

Yes. GeoKepo describes a drive from central Ruteng, and Atlas Obscura says cars can be chartered there with drivers who know the viewpoints. A car does not take you to the viewing point itself, as the final part is on foot.

How far is Cancar from Ruteng?

GeoKepo gives drive time only, at 30 to 45 minutes from central Ruteng. Distances vary by publisher: ASITA NTT, a travel-agent association, says 17 km, Lonely Planet 20 km and the operator Nusa Flores Travel about 15 km.

Is the road to Cancar paved?

GeoKepo says the road from Ruteng is paved and winding. Travel2flores warns that Flores roads change constantly, so check conditions locally on the day, especially after rain.

Are there steep roads to Cancar village?

Sources describe the road as winding and do not rate its gradient. If you plan to ride a scooter or drive yourself, ask someone in Ruteng who has used the road recently.

How do you get to the Cancar rice fields without your own vehicle?

Charter a car or bemo in Ruteng, which Atlas Obscura describes, or try the rural transport GeoKepo mentions. Settle your way back before you leave the vehicle, as no timetable is published.

Which published prices did we check?

Public third-party listings and press reports, each with its source and the month we checked it. These are not our prices or offers. No official tariff for the viewpoint was found, several figures are old, and sources disagree, so check locally before you rely on a figure.
