Ruteng weather by month follows a sharp wet and dry split. Modelled Climate-Data figures quoted by Wikipedia run from about 541 mm in January down to 71 mm in July, with June to August the drier stretch. Expect cool highland air all year, and check a live forecast close to your date, because averages say nothing about a particular day.

What does Ruteng weather by month look like?

Very wet for most of the year and markedly drier for a short spell in the middle. The table uses average monthly rainfall for Ruteng from Wikipedia, citing Climate-Data.org. These are modelled climate figures and not station readings for your trip, and nothing on this page is a forecast. The last column is this guide's plain reading of the number.

September142Rain returning
October284Wet again
November394Very wet

The twelve months add up to 3,564 mm. No separate series is available for Cancar or Meler, so the Cancar climate is being read from a Ruteng number. GeoKepo, a travel listing, puts the fields at about 1,000 m, and Flores Eco Tours, an operator, puts Ruteng at about 1,200 m, so conditions on the ridge can differ from those in town.

Which months are driest?

June, July and August. Wikipedia describes moderate rainfall in those months and heavy to very heavy rain in the others, and Bali Genie also calls mid-year the drier window. September is a shoulder month, with about twice July's total and half of October's.

Dry does not mean rainless: July still averages 71 mm in the modelled figures, which are no forecast. It also does not settle the crop question. Nusa Flores Travel, an operator, tells visitors to avoid June to September because it favours planting and the early growing season, and it lists July to August as a busy holiday period. So the driest months may be the most comfortable for walking without being the greenest, and other sources dispute the planting calendar. The Cancar rice season guide takes that up, and the best time to visit weighs the two against each other.

What do February, April, August and December look like?

Each note below pairs the modelled Ruteng rainfall with what a named source says about that part of the year.

  • February: 482 mm, close to the peak of the year. Komodo Trekker, an operator, names January to February as green season, while Flores Eco Tours places February inside its October to March window of uncertain flights.
  • April: 306 mm, well down on March and still more than double any month from June to September. Roammate, a guide site, calls March to April lush green.
  • August: 80 mm, inside the months Wikipedia describes as moderate. Nusa Flores Travel, an operator, lists July to August as a busy holiday period.
  • December: 458 mm. Roammate, a guide site, describes flooded fields from November to January, and Nusa Flores Travel, an operator, lists December to January as busy. Harvest timing is disputed: Azimuth says it ends in November, while a study of Meler village reports a December harvest.

None of this tells you what a given week will bring. It shows which trade-off each month asks you to accept.

How cold does it get?

Cool by Flores standards, though published numbers differ. Each figure below belongs to one source and should be kept apart from the other.

Neither figure comes with a monthly breakdown, so month-by-month claims would be guesswork. Altitude explains the difference from the coast: Ruteng's airport alone sits at 1,150 m, according to Wikipedia. If you are arriving from Labuan Bajo, expect the evening to feel noticeably different and keep a layer within reach rather than at the bottom of a bag.

What should you pack?

Plan for steps, sun and rain, sometimes on the same morning. The first three rows come from named sources; the last is this guide's own suggestion.

Mongabay and a Ruteng hotel page both mention bamboo rails on the climb to Puncak Weol, which is the reason for the note about free hands. Grip is what the published lists stress, more than waterproofing.

Why do rainfall totals differ?

Because they measure different things, and no one figure should be read as the true one. Do not blend them.

  • 3,564 mm a year: the sum of the modelled monthly figures on Wikipedia, for Ruteng.
  • 3,340 mm a year: the figure from Flores Eco Tours, an operator, also for Ruteng.
  • 2,440.9 mm, with seven wet months: a study of Manggarai Regency, which covers the whole regency and not the town.

The gap between the regency average and the town figures is a useful warning in itself. Rainfall can vary across a mountainous regency, so a trip plan built on a single annual number is on weak ground. Use the monthly pattern as a guide to odds, and use a live forecast for the actual decision a few days out. If a service has no entry for Cancar, read the Ruteng rain forecast and allow for the difference in altitude.

How can weather change your trip?

In three ways, beyond getting wet. Visibility comes first: Bali Genie says cloud can hide the view. Flights come next: Flores Eco Tours warns that fog and rain often unsettle Ruteng flight schedules, October to March above all, so leave slack if a connection depends on one. Roads are the third: Travel2flores, updated in March 2026, warns that road conditions keep changing, with floods and landslides on smaller routes. They are reasons to keep a spare day in the wetter months.

What do visitors ask about Cancar weather?

Is Cancar cold at night?

The regency tourism office's 2026 guide says the highlands can be cold, especially at night, and advises a jacket. Figures published for Ruteng come from operators: 13 to 25 C from Flores Eco Tours and 17 to 25 C from Azimuth.

Does weather affect the Cancar viewpoint?

Yes. Cloud can block the view altogether, Bali Genie warns, and wet weather makes the banks and slope slippery. The pattern needs some visibility from above to read at all, so a cloudy morning can mean seeing little, whatever the season.

What rain gear suits the Cancar steps?

Reports describe steps with a bamboo rail on the climb to Puncak Weol, so this guide suggests a hooded rain shell that leaves a hand free. Flores Traveler, an operator, had raincoats in the bag on a walk in April 2024 and kept watching the view when the rain came.

What should I pack for Cancar?

Bali Genie's list is grippy footwear, water, sun protection and a light jacket. ASITA NTT adds that viewpoints are exposed at midday. Add some form of rain cover outside the mid-year window, when the modelled rainfall figures climb steeply.

Is August a good month for Cancar?

August is the second driest month in the modelled Ruteng figures, which are no forecast. For crop colour, the picture is less clear, because Nusa Flores Travel, an operator, advises against June to September while other sources disagree on the farming calendar.
